We’re looking for a Site Reliability Engineer to help us build, operate, and scale Chess.com’s infrastructure as we continue through a large-scale hybrid cloud migration. Our teams design and run the systems that keep the platform fast, secure, and available for hundreds of millions of players.

This is a global, remote-first role within the SRE team. You will play a key part in ensuring our systems are reliable, cost-effective, and ready to grow as the platform evolves.

What You’ll Do

  • Own and improve the reliability, scalability, and performance of Chess.com’s production systems across cloud and on-prem environments.
  • Design, build, and maintain infrastructure automation, monitoring, and alerting systems that help us detect and resolve issues quickly.
  • Lead incident response and on-call operations, including post-incident reviews and long-term fixes that prevent repeat failures.
  • Partner with engineering teams to improve service reliability through SLOs, capacity planning, and performance engineering.
  • Build and maintain tooling for deployments, CI/CD, observability, and infrastructure as code.
  • Support a large-scale hybrid cloud migration by helping teams plan and execute safe, incremental moves from on-prem to cloud.
  • Drive cost efficiency and performance optimization across cloud and infrastructure spend.

What You Need

  • Strong experience in site reliability, platform engineering, or infrastructure engineering, ideally in large-scale, high-traffic systems.
  • Deep knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or similar), containerization (Kubernetes, Docker), and infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar).
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of networking, Linux systems, and distributed systems.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills in Python, Go, or Bash.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in a remote-first, async environment.
