Overview

GOOD Worldwide is the home of good.is and upworthy.com, and together we unlock and amplify human potential — for good. We’re a mission-driven media company that reaches 200MM+ people per month, largely through social media. We create and distribute stories that are both meaningful and shareable, intentionally crafting them to have the best chance of reaching millions of people. Our stories focus on the people and ideas pushing the world forward, covering topics like diversity, human rights, the environment, mental health, parenting, relationships, labor and work, science, health, and culture.

What We’re Looking For:

You’re fast. You have incredible instincts for how the Internet will respond to the important conversation of the moment, and believe that together, we can move that conversation in a direction that makes the world a better place. You know how to take advantage of those moments as they come.

You’re a rock-solid reporter and a talented, creative storyteller. You are ambitious, competitive (in a friendly way), self-motivated and accountable, thrive on teamwork, and are focused on the big picture but can break complex issues down into accessible, actionable components. You are platform-and medium-agnostic, with a sharp eye for all forms of great storytelling, including writing, video, and visual storytelling, and savvy packaging. You are flexible in your voice and style, able to produce a thoughtfully reported and suspenseful narrative ability, then jump into trending topics to highlight the most important angles and ideas with ease. You embrace the opportunity to tell great stories in all forms, understanding that great ideas can come from anywhere. You are committed to growing and improving, working collaboratively with editors, producers, and others across the company to find new ways to reach new people every day.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the internet for topics, events, personalities, and ideas that we can uniquely respond to and expand upon.
  • Pitches ideas for original stories and angles on current trends that help elevate the public conversation.
  • Fearlessly and flexibly take on any story assignment, delivering approximately 4 to 7 stories per week, based on the scope of your pitches and overall editorial calendar needs.
  • Quickly builds story packages by developing thumbnails, headlines, and other clickable, shareable visual and verbal elements for each story.
  • Enjoys a generally flexible work schedule, but is available to work scheduled shifts (occasionally on evenings or weekends) to cover live events and respond to breaking stories, as assigned.
  • Be as excited about developing and delivering on collaborative projects, like series and editorial packages, as you are about doing pieces featuring only your byline.
  • Attend regular weekly and daily meetings on video calls with proper access to the tech and internet support needed to do so.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has 2+ years professional experience in digital journalism or a closely-related field.
  • Is a proactive communicator and a professional self-starter. We work remotely, so you must be comfortable managing your own schedule and, workload while communicating frequently in Slack, email, and video chat.
  • Is comfortable occasionally working on sponsored and brand-supported stories, within our editorial guidelines.
  • Has a healthy sense of skepticism and is good at sniffing out stories that are too good to be true / hoaxes / fake news / white savior narratives / inspiration porn
  • Loves learning and is constantly looking to improve and hone their skills.
  • Is plugged in to various social media sites, even if they don’t have a large social media presence of their own, and knows how to translate a conversation from Reddit, Tumblr, Twitter, or Facebook for people who aren’t on those sites.

Additional Considerations:

  • We highly value all aspects of diversity! Candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
  • We welcome nontraditional candidates. Especially those with a background in storytelling on social media.

About Upworthy

Upworthy is on a mission to tell stories that bring people together — because we’re all part of the same story.

The internet was supposed to open doors to new ideas. But too often it narrows our world instead of broadening it. And fills it with empty stories that drown out the ones that matter most.

But sometimes a story opens a door to a new and better world. It might make you feel surprised, happy, inspired, motivated, even sad. These stories connect us with each other. They are rocket fuel for empathy. They change our hearts, our minds and sometimes even, the world.

Upworthy tells those stories, and helps them reach millions every day. Stories that are worth your time — and that make the world a better place.

The company was founded by Eli Pariser, of MoveOn, and Peter Koechley, of The Onion. The staff includes veterans from The New York Times, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, Thompson Reuters, and Discovery to name a few.

The staff is distributed and works across the country. Work from home, from a coffee shop, from a coworking space — anywhere with good enough Internet to do a Google Hangout. Go move to Montana for a month and work from there if you want. (And if you already live in Montana, keep on living there!) There are no remote workers here; we’re all part of a distributed team.
