Overview

Wolfram, creator of Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha and the Wolfram Language, is seeking a User Experience Designer whose mission is to transform complex problems into engaging and beautiful experiences for users of Wolfram technology and to help them use the Wolfram Language. You will be part of a small UX team that collaborates with project managers and development teams working on Wolfram Language applications for desktop, web and mobile. You can choose to work at our headquarters in Champaign, Illinois, or remotely.

Responsibilities:

  • Working on user experience design for Wolfram Language–based applications for desktop, web and mobile devices, especially user-assistance features that will help users make coding in the Wolfram Language easier or help them use Wolfram products
  • Translating abstract concepts and complex visions into elegant user interfaces and experiences
  • Creating personas, user stories, flow diagrams, clean and annotated wireframes and interactive prototypes that effectively communicate the design to executive stakeholders, graphic designers and developers
  • Collaborating with visual design to develop and maintain product user interface style guides
  • Applying lean and Agile methodologies to the user experience design process
  • Becoming familiar with the Wolfram technologies and products that will go hand-in-hand with your designs
  • Investigating competitive products and solutions from other markets to bring new ideas
  • Conducting usability tests or interviews and analyzing the resulting data
  • Proactively managing your own list of projects, tasks, notes and expectations to meet deadlines
  • Proactively consulting the graphic design, business analysis and development teams for feedback and questions
  • Staying informed and on top of industry trends, advancements in the field of user experience and initiatives within Wolfram

Requirements:

  • Experience as a user experience designer, interaction designer or a similar role for desktop, mobile and/or web applications
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree in the field of human-computer interaction, human factors, design or another related field
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a variety of deliverables (e.g. annotated wireframes, flow diagrams, research, interactive prototypes) that demonstrate a thoughtful approach to solving complex design problems
  • Experience in using Axure RP or other prototyping tools
  • Experience in programming in the Wolfram Language or other programming languages
  • Experience in designing applications for programmers is a plus
  • Excellent written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills
  • Sharp eye for detail and strong understanding of user-centered design principles
  • Familiarity with common design patterns for mobile, web and desktop (both Mac and Windows), and modern design trends
  • Experience in performing competitive analysis and usability testing
  • Understanding of common software development lifecycle processes
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines under pressure and defend your design choices to stakeholders, including those at the executive level, but being open and respectful regarding their decisions and recommendations
  • Bachelor’s degree
