Overview

GitHub is looking for a designer to join our Design Systems team. The design systems team is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving our style guide documentation site, tooling to support design workflows, and our CSS frameworkโ€”Primer.

As a systems designer, you can help us achieve our ambitious plan to improve and expand our systems across all our platforms and web properties. You’ll get to shape the foundations of this work, and make a positive impact to the design and engineering workflows of GitHubbers, as well as improving the user experience for GitHub customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead large-scale UI updates (such color systems, navigation components, and interaction patterns).
  • Be a core contributor to our CSS framework, Primer, by refactoring and improving our CSS and documentation.
  • Triage and fix UI bugs with accessible, user-friendly, and robust solutions.
  • Design for systems that work across multiple platforms.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of design tools.
  • Work with other designers, PMs, engineers, and marketers to help plan future projects.
  • Be an advocate for design systems, and teach other designers and engineers how to use them.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a product design role or with product teams, with examples of strong interaction work.
  • Experience contributing to design systems within an organization or open-source project.
  • Solid understanding of HTML and CSS (including Sass).
  • Experience rolling out large-scale UI updates. You’ll need to plan, design, and ship updates that touch every part of the GitHub UI.
  • Experience writing technical documentation, such as contribution and installation guidelines, tutorials, and setup instructions for supporting tools.
  • Excellent communication skills. Be able to share ideas to a cross-section of the org in writing since many folks are remote.
  • Experience in training colleagues how to use design systems, CSS frameworks, or other front-end and workflow tools.
  • Experience with GitHub and version control.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading a design systems project or team.
  • Experience with package management and versioning.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript or Rails.
  • Experience working with brand application within products.
  • Icon design or distribution.
