We are looking for a Staff Engineer to join our growing Core Services,  Engineering Group. In this role, you will work closely with key technical partners across the organization to ensure that BenchSci’s infrastructure and related practices can support our long-term growth. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will provide technical leadership across several areas within the team, lead complex projects, participate in roadmap and project planning, and actively contribute to BenchSci’s technical roadmap. The Staff Engineer will help foster the growth and development of other individual contributors while also playing a pivotal role in helping us scale as we continue to impact scientific discovery long-term.

You will

  • Identify parts of our system and infrastructure that do not scale or meet reliability, observability and security requirements.
  • Provide tactical and strategic solutions to system and infrastructure scalability, reliability and observability gaps.
  • Collaborate with our infrastructure team to drive high-quality designs to improve our infrastructure provisioning and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Collaborate with our Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) team to drive proactive system reliability improvement and refactoring to minimize the impact of issues on customers.
  • Work on improving our performance testing tooling, and collaborate closely with our application development, search and SRE teams to tune the performance of critical services.
  • Partner with other engineering teams and identify opportunities to improve our development tooling and frameworks.
  • Partner closely with other Staff Engineers, Engineering Managers and Directors to devise and refine non-functional requirements to create the most reliable, secure, performant services for our customers using cutting-edge technologies.
  • Lead software and system design initiatives by leveraging cloud-native design patterns and injecting your cloud expertise into the entire development lifecycle.
  • Be an inspiring mentor and coach to other engineers
  • Act as an advocate for the company and its engineering team through various channels

You have

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional development experience, with two years at a Staff level
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with emphasis on translating business concerns into technical implementations
  • Ability to guide the engineering team towards making a decision while minimizing friction and using influence as effectively as direct control.
  • Strong background in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, Software Engineering or Systems Engineering
  • A track record of planning and executing large, complex, organization-wide migrations
  • A deep understanding of shell scripting and higher-level languages such as Python and Typescript.
  • Extensive experience working with any of the major public cloud providers like GCP, AWS or Azure
  • Experience developing with CI/CD orchestration and infrastructure-as-code solutions.
  • Experience monitoring services and infrastructure, log collection, analytics, error reporting and application performance monitoring.

Nice to haves, but not required qualifications:

  • Experience working with Google Cloud Platform
  • Expert understanding of Terraform or KCC
  • Strong knowledge of Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL and BigQuery technologies
  • Development experience of data pipelines that leverage Apache Beam (or GCP’s Dataflow)
