Overview
We’re looking for developers who want to help us build software that serves the world. Our team is hiring for two roles: the first role is for frontend web software engineering (full-time position) and the second role is for test engineering (contract). Both roles are great work for developers earlier in their professional software engineering career who want to become full stack software engineers building systems that scale. You will help make Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons better products for our users.
The frontend web software engineering (full-time position) position entails work on user experiences for the Multimedia team. You will write JavaScript, CSS, and frontend PHP that helps power experiences on sites like Wikimedia Commons.
The test engineering (contract) position will focus on test automation, manual testing, and in some cases building user experiences with the Web team.

We value these things:
- Clearly and concisely communicating complex ideas about software and software development
- Authoring polished JavaScript, CSS, and PHP
- Instrumenting new and core features and maintaining a set of key performance indicators
- Profiling, analyzing, and optimizing code for performance and user experience on a wide variety of devices
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or management information systems (or related area) or software bootcamp certification; or equivalent in related work experience
- Knowledge in JavaScript, HTML5, CSS, and modern web standards
- A drive to advocate for the adoption of modern web standards and mobile-friendly design
- A desire to create features for everyone, everywhere and to optimize at the intersection of performance and user perception
- An interest in working with legacy software and modernizing code
- Interest in focused software engineering: writing unit tests, reviewing code and responding to code reviews, and discussing architectural approach
- Experience with testing software
- A love of free knowledge and open access
Pluses:
- Experience with editing Wikipedia and/or wikitext
- Open source contribution
- Experience developing web applications with PHP
- Knowledge of DOMs
- Experience with test automation (e.g., Cucumber, Selenium, WebdriverIO, Ruby)
- Patience
