The Verge is seeking a talented and passionate Reviews Editor to join our team in San Francisco. As a Reviews Editor on our Guidebook team, you’ll primarily be responsible for assigning, writing, and editing two kinds of important stories: reviews of consumer tech and how-to articles.
The Verge Reviews program is the essential guide to tech. Our goal is to help our massive audience decide what to buy, what not to, and how to use it all — but those are just the basics. Verge Guidebook goes further: our stories explain why the tech that’s impacting your life right now is worth paying attention to. Across video, photography, the web, and every platform imaginable, our reviews and how-to guides educate our audience. We may be experts, but we don’t speak in arcane language and we always strive to tell stories in addition to measuring specs.
As an editor on this team, you will be responsible for delivering on those promises to our audience. You’ll work closely with our own staff and freelancers you’ll be responsible for finding and editing. In addition to editing, you will have the opportunity to write reviews and news and appear in related video projects.
Our ideal candidate has strong editorial and organizational skills, a strong network of contacts, and expertise in writing about technology. Along with building up how-to coverage, the Reviews Editor will help steer Guidebook’s day-to-day direction and its long-term tone. We are looking for an editor who understands the news cycle but isn’t beholden to it when it comes to formulating story ideas.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Skills in organization, delegation, and operational efficacies
- The ability to balance editor responsibilities and personal reporting
- Be able to take meetings in the Bay Area as needed
- Be able to work from our San Francisco office as necessary
- A deep passion for and expertise in consumer technology
- Ability to find, assign, and follow up on compelling stories, especially those that aren’t tied to specific news cycle
- A track record of assigning and editing stories that perform online
If this describes you, please submit: a cover letter that includes links to three stories you’ve assigned and edited, links to three stories you have written, a resume, and three story ideas you’d assign this week if you were assigning how-to stories for Guidebook.
We prefer this position to be based in San Francisco; however, we’re open to other locations for the right candidate. Please let us know in your cover letter if you’re unable to perform this position in San Francisco.
