Business Development at Shopify has a responsibility to “Make Commerce Better” by creating partnerships with leading platforms and distribution channels. We focus on acquiring new customers, creating new revenue opportunities, and making Shopify the best product to launch and run a business.

Business Development Leads operate within the various product groups in Shopify. An ideal candidate works alongside the Product Manager as well as the team core stakeholder group, made up of: engineering, design, finance, and marketing functions. The goal is to accelerate growth and enhance the product experience for merchants.

We are looking for someone to join our team who can help Shopify’s ambition to make retail and in-person selling better for everyone. Back in Aug 2013, Shopify launched its first physical retail product, Shopify POS app on iOS exclusively for tablets. The product has grown a ton since then and today supports merchants with both a free and paid iOS and Android POS app including physical card readers with a direct integration to Shopify Payments in multiple geographies.

In addition to the points below, our ideal candidate will focus primarily on driving growth and distribution of Shopify’s retail initiatives, most specifically Shopify POS. To do this, this person will need to work across partners both in Shopify’s core and non-core markets to support channel development, hardware distribution and more.

Our ideal candidate:

  • You have 5-10+ years experience executing partnerships in tech, retail, commerce or payments industry
  • Experience launching hardware products into market (US experience is a must, other geographies is nice to have)
  • Experience in product marketing or product development
  • Experience working across product or engineering teams
  • Experience negotiating vendor or channel agreements
  • Exhibit strong financial acumen including having managed a P&L
  • You are not just metrics driven, but metrics obsessed
  • You are an entrepreneur and have started your own business

Nice to have:

  • Experience with M&A
  • Familiarity with SaaS business models
  • Technical understanding of payments hardware, offline payment technologies

You will:

  • Work alongside the Product Manager to understand the product vision and be able to communicate it convincingly to internal and external stakeholders
  • Act as the primary point of contact while creating and managing relationships with relevant contacts pre/post the launch of business development deals
  • Own partnership discussions to negotiate equitable commercials for Shopify and its merchants with industry partners
  • Lead discussion across other functional teams within Shopify including Product, Engineering, Marketing, Legal, and Finance to execute on various opportunities
  • Revisit and analyze current deals to learn what actionable things can be done to optimize them moving forward
  • Support the strategic objectives and interest of Shopify’s business teams on a global basis
  • Think strategically about new business models, and product integrations with the ability to build and convey compelling value propositions and drive innovation through partners
  • Pursue an entrepreneurial / small team approach to business development
  • Eventually manage a small team to support the growth of Shopify’s Business Development efforts
  • Serve as an evangelist both inside Shopify and externally
