Overview
Amara is seeking passionate, talented Software Engineers who are driven by the desire to make positive impact in the world.
PARTICIPATORY CULTURE FOUNDATION (PCF) is a nonprofit working to build a more open and collaborative world. Amara, our flagship project, is essentially the Wikipedia for subtitling and translating video. We work with individuals and orgs (including TED, Scientific American, GitHub, Khan Academy, and hundreds of others) to remove barriers to communication and make the web a more inclusive place.
PCF is based out of Massachusetts, but the team is global and works virtually. Our open culture is reflected in how we work together. The team relies on voice and video chat, as well as email and instant message to remain in close touch.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Take on the development of new features, improvements, code cleanup and refactoring, and/or other engineering tasks.
- Work closely with Product Development & Design to review user needs and develop solutions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Strong command of Python and Django
- Ability to deliver clean, maintainable code
- Ability to learn and work with legacy code
- Ability to work remotely
- Self-motivated, quick learner

While internet video has exploded, language is still a significant barrier to education, economic opportunity, political participation, and other areas of cultural life. Amara connects millions of people to help break down these barriers and allows hundreds of organizations to make their content more accessible through innovative technology.

Amara is a project of the Participatory Culture Foundation (PCF), a nonprofit 501c3. Content that can enrich lives, but is not currently available to those who cannot hear or understand the language of the video. HOW WE COLLABORATE
Engineers will work closely with our Product Development & Design team to bring new features and functionality to life on the Amara platform.
Amara and PCF is based out of Massachusetts, but the team is global and works virtually. Youโll be collaborating with a talented and passionate team striving to make positive social impact.
The team uses chat and video apps (Skype, Slack, Google Hangouts) as well as email for internal communication.
