The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that hosts and operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Wikimedia is the world’s fifth most popular digital platform, used in everything from secondary education to advanced computational research. Each month, around a billion people visit the Wikimedia sites, to learn about topics ranging from classical music to Bollywood stars to quantum mechanics.
While Wikipedia is the largest and best-known of the Wikimedia projects, it is only one part of our work. Other widely-used projects include Wikimedia Commons, which contains more than 40 million free media files, and Wikidata, an open structured and linked data repository with nearly 50 million items. We are also the primary developer of MediaWiki, a free and open source collaborative software platform. Wikimedia is:
- Around 300 languages;
- Written by 250,000 monthly contributors;
- Visited around 6,000 times each second;
- By roughly 1.5 billion devices every month.
About the role
The Learning & Evaluation Intern will support the Community Engagement Department at the Foundation to turn numbers and stories into insights. This roles sits on the Learning & Evaluation (L&E) team, is managed by the Senior Evaluation Strategist, and will collaborate closely with other L&E team members. The 2019 intern will primarily help the L&E team and our colleagues to evaluate the outcomes of our capacity building efforts. This will include the creation of post-event surveys, follow-up surveys, data analysis, and summarizing of results. The intern will also help to create and curate evaluation resources that can be used by Foundation colleagues and our international communities of Wikimedia volunteers.
Responsibilities:
- Design and disseminate surveys in Qualtrics and Google Forms
- Export data from surveys into Excel and Google spreadsheets for analysis
- Ensure data in spreadsheets are accurate and organized properly to enable analysis
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative survey data, following evaluation standards of utility, accuracy, and propriety
- Document procedures and calculations used to analyze data
- Summarize data into tables and charts so that key metrics are accessible to staff
- Assist with identifying trends or patterns in data sets and generate charts and graphics to illustrate results
- Assist with the development, design, modification, writing and dissemination of reports and data dashboards
- Support the design of focus groups and analysis of qualitative focus group data
- Help to compile and organize the data, metrics, and outcomes that our volunteer communities are tracking
- Inform the development of a Wikimedia movement evaluation framework
- Support the L&E team in the creation of evaluation resources and materials
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a Master or Doctoral program in social sciences, education, international development, public policy, public health or similar field
- Knowledge of program evaluation (either through academic training or professional experience)
- Formal training in quantitative and qualitative social science research methods and an understanding of basic statistical concepts
- Experience with qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
- Experience with data entry, cleaning, and analysis in Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet platform
- Some experience summarizing findings from data into reports using narrative, tables, and graphs
- Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to work systematically to ensure accuracy and quality
- Desire to learn more about evaluation and use of data in nonprofit settings
- Ability to work remotely through the use of collaborative technology (e.g. Google Suite)
- Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks and work collaboratively, as well as independently
- The ability to flourish in a highly transparent and collaborative environment and work on a team with diverse demographic and cultural characteristics.
- Ability to problem solve and to learn and apply new technologies
- Exceptional written communication skills and interpersonal skills
Nice to haves:
- Experience with advanced statistical software, such as R, SPSS, and/or Nvivo
- Interest or knowledge in Wikimedia projects, the free knowledge movement, global education and/or international development
- Multilingual students are a plus!
