Overview

Vox Media employees go deep, thriving on innovation and change while ambitiously seeking to master their subject areas, hone their craft, and improve their communities. We help smart, talented, creative professionals make a meaningful impact in media, technology and the world around them. The Vox Media house of brands includes industry-leading media forces like SB Nation, Eater, The Verge, Vox, Curbed, Recode, Racked and Polygon, and reaches an audience of hundreds of millions, generating over a billion content views each month.

Polygon is looking for a full-time games reporter to join its growing news team. We’re looking for someone who excels at getting inside of different gaming communities and covering them in depth. You’ll need to be just as comfortable covering the crush of news that happens during E3 as you are at home digging up stories where gaming communities actually live. We’re looking for the constantly curious, who live online in places like Twitch, Discord, YouTube, Reddit and NeoGAF. You’ll need to write quickly and accurately, and file multiple stories a day for Polygon. What kinds of stuff will you be writing? What the GTA Online role-playing community is up to, finding the next Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, or understanding Tumblr’s fascination with Marina instead of Pearl. This job will also include traveling to some major gaming events, as well as attending preview events locally.

The ideal person should have strong writing experience, to start. They’ll also need sharp news judgment and a curiosity about the gaming landscape, particularly in the places where people are discussing games in 2017. Gaming news comes from far more than press releases, and we’re looking for someone who’s eager and excited in going out and finding it.

Requirements:

  • Ability to write quickly, clearly and accurately in a fast-paced environment, and file multiple stories a day.
  • Interest in pursuing gaming news from a variety of sources, and a willingness to cultivate beats.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with online publishing tools.
  • Eagerness to collaborate with the rest of the Polygon team, both other writers as well as video producers.
  • Location: ideally, we’d like someone able to come into our New York headquarters at least four days a week. We are open to remote people if you are near LA or the Bay Area, or can get to either easily.
  • You like video games, but also other stuff too.
  • Bonus: Interest in covering things like genre entertainment news, anime or esports as part of your beats.

Responsibilities:

  • Be deeply connected to gaming news, with an understanding of where news is coming from and conversations are happening
  • Come up with fresh, sharp angles on the day’s news and offer smart opinions that complement the straight news and offer new insights for readers
  • Report news out as necessary, sometimes on tight deadlines.
  • Appearing on camera occasionally
  • Participate in local or global event coverage as required
  • Occasional travel as required

Deadline: We are closing this application on Sunday Sept. 10 at 11:59 p.m.
