Eater is looking for a Daily Editor, a newly credited role on the national site. The Daily Editor will oversee Eater’s day-to-day news and cultural coverage, from next-minute reactions to second-day analysis, defining the voice and perspective of the brand on the biggest and most important news of the moment, with a keen eye toward building and sustaining a loyal national audience. This coverage is the beating heart of the site, providing immediate insight and keen perspective on everything from the joy of Salt Fat Acid Heat to Trump’s garbage dietary habits to Starbucks’ latest nightmare Frappuccino to famous chefs behaving badly to ICE raids on restaurant workers.
Eater is looking for an editor with a mind for ingenious angles, an ear for crystalline copy, an absolutely fearless perspective, and a sense for how to cultivate singular voices. This position is as much about driving the conversation in the food and restaurant world as it is leading it in mainstream news and cultural coverage through the lens of food and restaurants, with a daily report that is prompt, intelligent, irreverent, and voice-y.
The Daily Editor will manage a small team of talented staff writers to assign, edit, and produce the core of Eater’s daily output, with a focus on news, culture, and entertainment, as well as edit the occasional freelance piece. This is — it cannot be overstated — not a writing position. This position can be remote, but it will work on East Coast hours.
Our ideal candidate is a laser-sharp editor, newsroom leader, and true team player with at least three years of experience in a fast-paced daily news environment (bonus points for true blogging experience). We’d like to see evidence of a track record for unique story angles, incisive breaking news coverage, and a generalist’s ability to assign and edit stories about just about anything. Experience in food media is helpful, but not required.
