Overview

Engineering Managers at Treehouse lead people and projects to deliver a product roadmap that exceeds our students’ expectations and achieve the companyโ€™s mission. They demonstrate mastery in regard to professional growth of their team and and managing projects to meet business needs. They have an exceptional ability to foster and maintain highly collaborative and effective relationships across disciplines and departments.

This position can be remote – working anywhere within the US, or on-site at our headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Responsibilities

  • People Leadership– Provides guidance and goal setting for team members to encourage professional development and advancement in their design or development skills. Conducts recruiting and hiring of exceptional engineers that complement our Treehouse teams. Conducts annual performance reviews, including recommendations for promotions and merit increases. Develops performance improvement plans and conducts terminations as needed. Provides support and coaching via weekly one-on-one meetings.
  • Project Leadership– Manages physically distributed engineering teams in the development of requirements, architecture, system design, implementation, and testing of high quality products to deliver product roadmap commitments. Partners with Product Owner, Product Management, and customer representatives to acquire an understanding of functional and nonfunctional requirements. Ensures engineering projects conform to Treehouse defined development methodologies and standards. Daily project management of teams with regard to planning, risk mitigation, course corrections, and providing transparent status updates to the business. Coordinates efforts with other Engineering Managers and cross-functional stakeholders to ensure the successful product delivery.
  • Process Improvement– Leads planning and implementation of new engineering processes, tool, and technology adoption.
  • Bring Trust and Dependability– Provides leadership on projects that enables Engineering teams to meet their commitments. Provides accurate status of multiple project teams and cross project team engineering efforts inside and outside of the Engineering department. Develops Engineering best practices that support the Treehouse business goals. Proactively identifies problems that may impact multiple teams. Effectively communicates and partners with team mates, manager, and stakeholders to achieve individual, team, and project goals. Effectively works in a distributed team environment. Demonstrates the ability to adapt as the external environment and organization evolves and coaches others through times of change.
  • Live Treehouse Mission and Values– Actively demonstrates the Treehouse Mission and Values in their daily work life. Develops Engineering projects and initiatives that reflect the Treehouse Mission and Values. Consistently works to articulate The Treehouse Way through the Engineering blog. Serves as a role model to others living these values.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of people and project management experience or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years developing web or mobile software applications as a developer, designer, or manager, or equivalent experience. Experience with modern web frameworks (such as Ruby on Rails) preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing a high-performing, distributed team
  • Proven track record of delivering high visibility projects on time, budget, and quality
  • Ability to multi-task across multiple projects, initiatives, and/or teams
  • Strong customer orientation. Skilled in developing an understanding of customer needs and identifying optimal technology solutions
  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills, as well as demonstrating professional conduct and situational awareness
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to both technical and non-technical audiences.
