Overview

As a Twilio Developer Educator, your job is to challenge and empower developers to build the future of communications. In this role on the Developer Education team, your primary vehicle for serving our developer community will be through our self-paced training platform, TwilioQuest.

We think TwilioQuest is brimming with potential. Our next Developer Educator will own the vision and brand for TwilioQuest and work to introduce it to more developers.

As part of that work, you may do things like:

  • Develop and own our roadmap for TwilioQuest, making tough decisions about the right things for us to focus on each quarter
  • Build new features for TwilioQuest, either authoring PRs yourself or working with other developers inside Twilio (learn about our stack here)
  • Create and manage campaigns which draw new developers to try TwilioQuest
  • Author new content for TwilioQuest which teaches developers how to use Twilio’s products and other developer tools
  • Productionize our Superclass training events, which combine TwilioQuest’s self-paced content with assistance from TAs, into a repeatable event anyone can run
  • Analyze TwilioQuest usage data to better understand our opportunities for growing TwilioQuest
  • Work with teams across Twilio to bring elements of TwilioQuest into other parts of Twilio’s developer experience
  • Coordinate with volunteers to run Twilio training events in their own communities anywhere in the world

Requirements

A Twilio developer educator should be able to draw on their technical knowledge, communication skills, and general engineering prowess to learn the basics of any product in Twilio’s portfolio and teach them to a developer.

As our developer educator focused on TwilioQuest, you’ll also need to wear a few different hats. In addition to “developer”, you’ll at times play the roles of “product manager”, “instructor”, and “marketer.”

Some qualities we think essential are:

  • Solid and diverse engineering skills – If you were writing code full time, you’d be a great performer. You’ve probably maintained a non-trivial project in production and understand the joys and risks involved.
  • A knack for teaching technical concepts – Whether as an instructor, mentor, or peer, you’ve discovered that when it comes to teaching the keys to success are empathy, patience, and attention to detail
  • Friendly and approachable – We find these people do well as the teachers and teammates we’re looking for
  • Entrepreneurial thinking – As the owner of the TwilioQuest product, you’ll need the ability to act effectively with only high-level direction
  • Willingness to travel – As we expand our Superclass training events around the world, you’ll need to travel a few times a quarter
  • Join our on-call rotation – Our team maintains the backend for twilio.com/docs and twilio.com/quest. Once you have your feet wet you’ll be on call every six weeks.

Here are some other skills we value, but if you don’t have them on day one we can help you develop them:

  • Technical writing skills as demonstrated via blog posts, docs, or other written work. In this position you’ll write for TwilioQuest and Twilio’s docs
  • An opinion on what makes good technical documentation which you’ve acquired by consuming different docs as a developer and maybe even preparing some yourself

Application notes

  • Please include a cover letter along with your resume, describing why you believe you’d be a great fit for the team. Please also tell us a little about your favorite developer documentation or favorite developer training.
  • Links to other websites and resources where we might learn more about you (GitHub, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, portfolio, etc.) are greatly appreciated.
