GitHub is changing the way the world builds software and we want you to help change the way we build GitHub. We’re looking for an experienced database architect to help lead the effort of scaling our databases and work with a vibrant and distributed group of Platform engineers architecting how we persist data.

The engineers on GitHub’s Platform Data team are responsible for the scalability, maintainability and performance of our platform’s data stores, primarily MySQL and Elasticsearch.

Weโ€™re looking for someone with proven experience in managing the growth of MySQL databases. We expect this person to be able to demonstrate an expert understanding of MySQL and have knowledge of the best practice patterns involved in working at a large scale.

The Platform team is highly distributed and the right candidate can thrive in an environment of asynchronous communication. We expect you to have strong written communication skills and be able to create working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.

As a Platform Engineer, you’ll always be challenged to solve unique and interesting problems that have a real impact on how the world builds software.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designing, modeling and documenting the logical relationship of data and database changes for scalability
  • Guiding the development teamโ€™s best practices
  • Reviewing code and leading group discussions about engineering issues
  • Improving the scalability and performance for our platform
  • Detecting, fixing and preventing data quality issues
  • Collaborating with engineers on data schema design to support application development and data mapping and normalization
  • Define data access requirements to ensure efficient data retrieval and optimal DB design

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expert knowledge of MySQL and SQL, minimum 3 years experience
  • Experience with query performance tuning
  • Strong data modeling background
  • Ability to empathize with a diverse range of engineers
  • Strong written communication

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Experience working with Ruby on Rails
  • Experience with Elasticsearch or Redis
  • Experience being an open-source contributor
