Overview

The Wikimedia Android team is a small but impactful group of engineers, product managers, and designers focused on the Wikipedia Android app. The team is looking for an experienced Android developer who wants the challenge of making our apps the most beautiful, groundbreaking, and collaborative applications in the Google Play Store. We’re passionate about our global community of users and want to leverage the strengths of the Android native platform to bring the Wikipedia experience to their fingertips. You will be joining a small, established team to enhance the Wikipedia reading experience, as well as create entirely new Wikipedia experiences with potential for adoption across multiple platforms.

This is a permanent full-time remote or San Francisco-based role.

Responsibilities:

As an engineer on the Android team, you will be responsible for developing new, exciting and beautiful ways to experience Wikipedia content on mobile devices. You will work with a product manager and designer to translate specs and designs into working features. Your contributions will enable millions of Android users to read and contribute to Wikipedia.

In addition to new features, you will work to Improve the quality and testability of our code. This includes fixing bugs, refactoring old code, and performing code review. You will also communicate and coordinate service requirements with back-end engineers.

Since most team members are remote, your day-to-day work will include discussions on Google Hangouts and IRC as well as our bug tracking system.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or related area) and 5 years of relevant experience; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent work experience
  • 3+ years Android Java and UI experience
  • Familiarity with Android design guidelines, implementation and best practices
  • Passionate, hard-working professional committed to clean code and great app design
  • Proficiency in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS

Pluses

  • Familiarity with at least one server-side language (preferably Node.js or PHP)
  • Experience with test driven development
  • Experience with databases on Android
  • Experience contributing to open source Android apps or libraries
  • Experience integrating third party libraries into Android projects
  • Experience contributing to Wikipedia or its sister projects
  • Experience developing a product for a global audience
  • Experience working in a remote work environment
  • Multilingual
